Pool heaters can be electric or gas powered. Pool heat pumps work by sucking in outside air, turning it into gas and passing it through a heat exchanger. The pool pump circulates the water through the exchanger where heat is transferred, re-entering your pool 3-5 degrees hotter.
Gas pool heaters warm water by burning either gas or propane in a combustion chamber. The pool pump circulates water into the gas heater where heat is transferred, warming the water before it re-enters the pool.

If you’re looking for the ultimate in pool gas heaters then look no further – the Hayward Universal H-Series Gas Heater is the one for you!
Pool heat pumps are generally more expensive than gas heaters but the yearly costs are much lower due to efficiencies such as inverter technology. Additionally, pool heat pumps have longer lifespans than gas heaters, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look after them. Overall, the main advantage to heat pumps is that you’ll save money over time.
Gas pool heaters generally require less upfront costs when compared to heat pumps. Furthermore, they heat pool water faster and produce virtually no condensation. With advancements such as managed water flow reducing pump run time, gas heaters are definitely more efficient than they were. However, heat pumps are still more cost effective when it comes to operating costs.
For effective pool sanitation you’ll always need a little chlorine, however, you can dramatically reduce the side effects of chlorine by installing a sanitation system. Ozonators and salt chlorinators are a safe, natural solution to red, itchy eyes, and that horrible chlorine smell.
