How to decrease alkalinity in your pool

6th May 2026

Maintaining your pool’s alkalinity is key to a safe and enjoyable swim. Alkalinity refers to the amount of hydroxide and carbonate ions in the water. Aim for a total alkalinity of 80–120 ppm and a balanced pH to keep the water healthy.

High alkalinity can lead to cloudy water and scaling. To lower it, first test your water and then slowly add muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate according to the manufacturer’s directions. Let the pump circulate the water for a few hours and retest. Repeat in small doses until you reach the desired range.

Always adjust alkalinity before adjusting pH, since the two are related. By carefully lowering alkalinity and keeping up regular testing, you can enjoy crystal‑clear water all season long.
